How to inflate and deflate a stand up paddle board

Paddle boarding is well on its way to being the sport of the summer, and we absolutely love to see it. There’s an endless number of reasons as to why it’s surged in popularity, but a key one is how simple it is to get to grips with. That said, a little advice can still go a long way, and we want to make sure you get the most use possible out of your new board.

So, without further ado, here’s a step-by-step guide...

How to inflate a stand up paddle board

  1. Take your inflatable paddle board out of its travel bag, and fully unroll it with the valve facing up.
  2. Make sure the pin in the valve (often yellow) is upright before you start to inflate the board. If it’s not, all your hard work will come hissing straight back out as soon as you unplug the pump.
  3. Next, connect the hose that comes with the hand pump by pushing and twisting it. One end will attach to the valve, and the other to the pump.
  4. Double check these ends are both attached nice and tight – you’ll only be making things harder for yourself if they’re not.
  5. Hold the pump down by placing your feet on either side of it, and check you can see the PSI gauge clearly.
  6. Make sure the hose isn’t bent or tangled, then use both hands to alternately pull up and depress the handlebar of the pump.
  7. Repeat until you get to the recommended PSI level.
  8. As you get closer to the level of pressure you need, it will get harder to pump (not just because you’ll start getting tired). At this point, you can unscrew the cap on the side of the pump, which will make it easier.
  9. Once the board is fully pumped, detach the end of the hose from the valve and, assuming you’ve followed Step 2 correctly, the air shouldn’t suddenly rush out.
  10. Screw on the cap over the valve.
  11. If your board has a detachable fin, now’s the time to attach it.
  12. Fit together the parts of your paddle, and check it's the right length for you (stand the paddle up next to you, and the handle should fit in the bend of your wrist when your arm is outstretched above your head).
  13. Hit the water!

How to deflate a stand up paddle board

When you’re done on the water and are ready to head home, here’s how to pack your inflatable board up again.

  1. Lift your paddle board ashore and rinse it with fresh water if you have it available.
  2. If your fin detaches, now is the time to remove it.
  3. Unscrew the valve cap and push down the yellow pin to release the air. This will be fairly loud if you're doing it right, so if you prefer the peace and quiet, it's worth investing in the Red Paddle Co Silent Air Remover.
  4. Once most of the air is out of the board, start to roll it up from the opposite end to the valve, so you can squeeze any remaining air out as you roll.
  5. Pack it into its bag with the pump and collapsed paddle, ready for next time.
