With the planet struggling to keep up with humankind's demands, it's important now more than ever that we change our attitudes to become more sustainable. Surfing gives us the opportunity to feel closer to nature and really experience its power, but there are steps we can take to surf more sustainably and look after our planet. Here are 5 ways that you can change your habits to become more eco-friendly.
Swapping your wax for an organic wax which is made from natural materials and has a label made of recycled paper and soy-based inks could be your first step to surfing more sustainably. Matunas wax is non-toxic, biodegradable and environmentally friendly.
Neoprene is the main ingredient in many wetsuits out there but unfortunately, it's not great for the environment because it's not entirely biodegradable. Billabong's Natural Furnace Wetsuit is 100% neoprene free and 100% recyclable. Amazingly, this biodegradable wetsuit has a durability that's made to last. But made to last does not have to mean here forever. So when you're done with your wetsuit, the CiCLO fibers will eventually break down and disappear.
This wetsuit is made with Billabong's new innovative graphene-coated yarns which trap and retain heat more efficiently and for longer, making it incredibly warm. Knitted to allow the material to stretch and reduce water absorption and dry super-fast.
Plus, this wetsuit has a comp zipperless entry system with more stretch. No zipper = Better for the environment.
After enjoying the swell, you'll need to rehydrate. Try switching for a reusable bottle instead of a single use plastic bottle to reduce the amount of plastic entering our oceans. This Red Paddle Co Insulated Drinks Bottle keeps your drinks cold or hot. It uses high quality, super insulated stainless steel meaning it won't corrode like other metal drinks bottles, extending the life of your bottle.
Rubbish left on the beach can easily get swept up by the ocean, making an impact on the sea life. That is why picking up your litter at the beach is so important. There aren't always bins nearby, so check out our bags so you can easily take your rubbish home with you.
When you get home, there are still steps you can take to being more eco-conscious. Taking care of your wetsuit will make it last longer. When washing your wetsuit, use a biodegradable wetsuit shampoo such as Rip Curl 'Piss Off' so it won't harm the environment.
These are just a few small steps you can take whilst surfing to make a big impact on saving the planet.
